Hampden-Sydney Falls At Home To No. 16 Christopher Newport 8-4

Sophomore Christian Lancaster (Danville) had one hit and one RBI, and junior Trent Jones (Virginia Beach) added an RBI, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 8-4 non-conference baseball decision at home to nationally-ranked No. 16 Christopher Newport University on Tuesday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Freshman Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) took the pitching setback for the host Tigers (7-8) against the visiting Captains (16-5).

H-SC scored four runs on five hits with one error … scoring three runs in the fifth inning and one run in the eighth. CNU scored eight runs on 15 hits with three errors … scoring three runs in the first inning, two runs in the fourth, one run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.

In the fifth, Miller-Bopp (1-2) walked to begin the at-bat, advanced to second base on a ground ball out and moved to third on a throwing error when senior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) reached base on a fielder's choice by the third baseman. Miller-Bopp scored when Jones (RBI) reached on another throwing error, and both Beavers and Jones crossed the plate when the center fielder misplayed a fly ball off the bat of sophomore Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-5) … making it a 5-3 contest.

In the eighth, Masterson singled to right field to lead things off and later scored on a two-out RBI single to right field by Lancaster (1-3, RBI), a run that provided for the final 8-4 margin.

Miller-Bopp (1-2) started on the mound for the Tigers, who used seven pitchers, and tossed the first 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs, all earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Junior Jack Bourdon (Madison) pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit and no runs with no strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Kyle Woodall (Mechanicsville) tossed 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Classmate Colton Harris (Stuarts Draft) pitched one-third of an inning, yielding no hits and no runs with no strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing three hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Senior Russell Bowles (Moseley) pitched one-third of an inning, yielding no hits and no runs with no strikeouts and no walks. Senior Tymothy Hart (Powhatan) tossed the final scoreless inning, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC remains at home to play Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Ferrum College on Sunday, March 19, a conference doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
